New Director for Up Close Choir
We are delighted that the musical direction of Up Close, our a Capella choir, has been taken by local conductor, Jose Aparicio.
Jose is currently Artistic Director of the Napier Civic Choir and regularly conducts the Hawke’s Bay Orchestra. Though predominantly a singer he has dedicated much time and energy to developing his skills as a conductor as well as continuing performing and teaching the flute. His understanding and knowledge of repertoire is extensive, his perspective one of both performer and director.
In February the girls enjoyed attending the opera, The Elixir of Love, which was directed and conducted by Jose. They are really enjoying working on their repertoire for next term’s Big Sing Festival.
Students Gain Valuable Debating Experience
Four senior students, Michaela-Rose Tripp, Kendall Grace, Laura Matthews and Annah Knowles attended a weekend of competition and training with 20 other debating teams from Hawke’s Bay/East Coast.
The weekend was led by ten Victoria University Debating Society members with expertise in the Russell McVeigh style of debate. Each debate was adjudicated and extensive feedback given to each team.
Our team made it to the semi-finals which was a great effort but more importantly skills and strategy were sharpened ready for the Hawke’s Bay Secondary Schools Debating Competition.
As supporting teachers, Rachel Roberts and I also benefited from the adjudication workshop.
Outstanding Results in Sea Week Poetry Competition
The annual Sea Week Poetry competition took place this month as part of the National Aquarium of New Zealand’s Sea Week activities.
This year’s theme was ‘Looking beneath the Surface’ and once again, Woodford students were outstanding in gaining top places in all entered categories.
