Sports Round Up – Term 1, 2016

It was a busy and exciting Term 1 for sport with girls travelling the length and breadth of New Zealand to compete in their respective fields.  Here are some sporting achievement highlights.

Jessica Norris – Rowing

Jessica recently competed at the Maadi Cup in Twizel and finished 5th in the A final, three seconds away from getting a NZ trial. Jessica has also been nominated for the Hawke’s Bay Sports Awards for the Best Junior Team as part of her Hawke’s Bay “coxless” quadruple sculls team.


Eva Goodisson – Triathlon

Eva competed at the NZSS triathlon champs recently in Queenstown. Despite fresh snow that morning and being a bit chilly, she came out with a bronze in the u19 triathlon and 4th in the aquathon. Eva has also been selected as a finalist for the HB Junior Sports Person of the Year Award and represented ECNI at the NISS Athletics Champs.



Teegan Geary – Hockey

Teegan was selected for the NZ Maori hockey team which played in the recent Festival of Hockey.


Maia Troup – BMX

Maia competed in BMX pre nationals in Auckland finishing 3rd overall in 14th grade girls, the following week she finished 10th at the Nationals, missing out on the final by 1 point.


Olivia Lee – Swimming NZ Div 2 Invercargill

Olivia had an amazing experience at her first big NZ meet making the final for the 50m free. She also swam in two relays for the HBPB team where they came 4th in both – just missing out on a podium finish. All the races were close, especially the 50m free final with 1.5 seconds between 1st and 8th place, which shows the competitive nature of such a huge national meet.


Harriet Park – Surf

Harriet competed at the U14 New Zealand Surf Lifesaving Championships (Oceans ’16). A first time competitor at this huge event of nearly 900 competitors Harriet made it to four U13 girls finals events with two top ten placings: Beach Sprints (5th), Diamond event (9th), Surf Swim (11th), Run Swim Run (13th).



Olivia Ward – Surf / Hockey

Olivia recently went to the national U21 tournament representing Central who finished 4th. She also recently represented Hawke’s Bay in the affiliates tournament in the Festival of Hockey beating Australia Country 4-0 in the final!

Also in Term 1 Olivia attended the NZ surf lifesaving champs and placed 9th in NZ in beach flags.


Willa Aitken / Annabel Kerr – Dressage

Willa was captain of the Hawke’s Bay dressage team which included Annabel Kerr. This year was the first year since 1998 the team placed in the top three.


Sasha Norris

In the holidays Sasha went to Australia to play with an U15 invitational Hawke’s Bay team. The team won all of their games, scoring 68 goals and only 15 against.


Tessa Burns / Monique Way – Orienteering

Tessa finished 1st in the Junior sprint NISS orienteering and 4th in the long distance. Monique finished 4th in the Intermediate sprint and 9th in the long distance. Tessa also recently won the HBSS Junior Girls Orienteering title.


Tessa Burns – Futsal

At the Futsal NZSS championships Tessa was named the Most Valuable Junior grade girl player out of all the teams.


Samantha Cave – Tennis

Samantha was awarded 2016 Hawke’s Bay Junior Female Tennis Player of the Year at the Hawke’s Bay Annual Tennis Awards.


Alia Wentz – Athletics

Alia represented the East Coast in the NISS Athletics in Auckland, placing 4th in the 3000m. Alia also competed in the Hawke’s Bay/Gisborne Athletic champs and won both the 800m and the 1500m in her age group.


Jessica de Lautour – Eventing

Over the last couple of months Jessica has been competing in qualifiers and trial events to go to Christchurch to compete in the NZPCA Eventing Champs in April. Last weekend they competed at the final Area Trial at the HB Equestrian Park and Jessica was top of the Hawke’s Bay Competitors and 2nd overall. She is now competing in Christchurch for the Hawke’s Bay Area Team.
