Dumplings Bring Girls Together

I had great pleasure in welcoming our international students into my home for an evening on dumpling making last term.

The girls, who are from Futuna Island, Thailand, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong and China, came together to learn how to make Chinese dumplings (jiaozi) and enjoy the fruits of their labour.

The dumplings were beautifully made and very tasty. Our Principal Mrs Peterson joined us and could not resist trying the delicious dumplings and Director of Boarding Mrs Rathbone said they were the “best dumplings” she had ever tasted.

Deputy Head Girl Manae Feleu, from Futuna Island, enjoyed the evening so much she planned to bring the same experience to her boarding house.

After dinner, the girls enjoyed some board and card games. It was heart-warming to see how natural and comfortable the girls were despite coming from such different backgrounds. They were laughing, talking, singing, playing and getting to know each other better. They were also sharing their experience as international students at Woodford and encouraging each other to aim high and strive for their goals.

The evening created a unique environment for our international students to relax and feel at ease. It also allowed them to learn about each other’s background a little more and become more culturally aware and sensitive. The International Department will continue to organise this kind of event every term, bringing different country’s food as themes each time.
