The East Coast region of the annual Big Sing choral competition took place on Wednesday 30 June. The Woodford House Chapel Choir and Up Close had been practising hard all year preparing our repertoire for this event.
At the competition, each choir had to perform a selection of three pieces, which fell into three categories: Classical, New Zealand, and Other Styles. The Chapel Choir repertoire included Sicut Erat from the Magnificat by Niccola Porpora, Tundra by Ola Gjeilo, and There Future Lies by Anthony Ritchie. All three pieces were very challenging and tested the ability of the choir.
There Future Lies was the public debut of a piece commissioned for the Chapel Choir. This piece was created with the upcoming 125th anniversary celebrations in mind, and contained references to our school motto, the Beyond Blue Hills book, and the old school song, So here’s to the school on the top of the hill. It was very exciting to perform and present a brand new piece.
The Chapel Choir was also thrilled to win the Other Styles section award for our performance of Tundra.
We would like to thank our accompanist, Anna Hansen, for learning the very complex accompaniment, and for supporting the choir right through our journey towards the competition. We would also like to thank our director Ms Tobin for the commitment, support, time and energy she put towards us and the choir.
We are very proud of the hard work all the girls put into this competition, both in and out of rehearsals. Many girls were also in Up Close, the school musical Evita, and the Chamber Music contest, so have been stretched to their limits in the past few weeks. I thank you for your unfailing commitment.
