A special painting by one of New Zealand’s most prestigious and influential painters, Frances Hodgkins was gifted to Woodford House over 50 years ago. The beautiful painting was meant for former student, Ann Roberts, who was sadly diagnosed with leukemia in her sixth form year (now Year 12), in 1958. Ann passed away on January 2, 1959 and didn’t get to see the painting. Her family donated La Première Communion to Woodford House in memory of their daughter. Initially, the painting graced the dining room before being moved to the Chapel in 1976.
La Première Communion is currently on loan to the New Zealand Portrait Gallery for the Frances Hodgkins’ exhibition, which runs from November 16, 2017 – February 14, 2018 in Wellington. This is the first time the painting, which is worth at least $60,000, has left Woodford House.
Prints and greeting cards of the painting are highly sought after by families of Old Girls for 21st birthdays, weddings and other special occasions.
The Woodford House Foundation is delighted to offer La Première Communion prints for sale – purchase for yourself or as gifts.
