The Social Studies Department have been focusing on learning about the events of World War I in the run up to the 100th Anniversary of the Gallipoli landings which will be commemorated in April.

On 5 March our Year 10 students heard about the research of EIT Research Professor Kay Morris Matthews on the role and contribution of women to the Allied troops. Professor Matthews has been rediscovering some fascinating stories of the experiences of these brave New Zealand women and is working with museums in Central Hawke’s Bay, Napier and Gisborne to present their life stories to the wider public. Over the next few weeks Year 10 students will be conducting their own inquiries on women in World War I and we will be encouraging them to select individuals with whom they have a personal connection, for example through family, home town or interests.

We have also been playing a lead role in organising a joint Havelock North schools event which will take place on the afternoon of Friday, 24 April. Entitled ‘We Will Remember Them’ students from all seven Havelock North Schools will meet together on the village domain for a service which will include a commemorative item from each school. This is an event for invited school students and their teachers and we look forward to being part of an extremely significant and memorable event.
